Take the train to the Bavarian Forest

The station at Bayerisch Eisenstein is within walking distance of the house (about 10-15 minutes walk). The trains run approx. every hour to and from Plattling where you can connect with or from long distance trains. We are happy to meet you at the station when you arrive and take you back at the end of your stay.
The German train system can be checked at www.bahn.de. There is an English version of the site. You can check not only the times of trains to and from any destination in Europe but also tram and bus timetables.
Travel by train from the UK and other European countries
It is possible to get to Bayerisch Eisenstein in one day (max. 14 hours) from London, Paris, Bordeaux, Venice, Berlin, Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam, Budapest, Prague, Vienna and many more cities. Many places further away can be reached within 24 hours.
Train Travel from the UK
It is possible to travel by train from London to Bayerisch Eisenstein in 11 hours with just 3 (sometimes 4) changes: by Eurostar from London St. Pancras or Ebbsfleet changing at Brussels, Frankfurt and Plattling. You can leave London at 08.57 or Ebbsfleet at 09.15 and arrive in Bayerisch Eisenstein at 21.13. Note: there are engineering works in 2010 which can make your journey longer and/or with additional changes.
By booking well in advance, it should be possible to pay no more than £210 return for the whole return journey from London. There are now special tickets costing €99 return from London to Bayerisch Eisenstein, bookable from 3 months before travel date, through the German railways office in London, however, as with all cheap 'earlybird' tickets on German railways you have to be ready to book the minute they become available and they are in very short supply - we do not know anybody who has succeeded in booking a ticket at this price.
You can book the whole journey through the German railways office in London - phone 08718 80 80 66, Monday to Friday 09.00 to 17.00. However, while this is the easiest way of doing it, it oftens also turns out to be the most expensive.
The 2nd easiest way of doing it is to let us use our contacts at the Bahn in Germany for them to get the cheapest possible deals - recently we got a price which was 1/3 cheaper than the price given by the London Bahn office.
The 3rd way of doing it is the most complicated but consistently yields a satisfactory price, even if not the cheapest:
1. Go to the German railways site English version and sort out your journey, both ways. It will give you train times and numbers and platforms for the German part of the journey at least. Then check whether you can get one of their £49 or £59 return London-Cologne ticket for the day and time you want to travel. If you can, book it quickly before it disappers and go to step 3.
2a Book a Eurostar return ticket. The ideal is to book this through to Cologne but this can be a) expensive and b) too late in the day to get you into Bayerisch Eisenstein in the evening. So you may have to give up and go for a return ticket to Brussels, non-flexible, £65 per person.
2b. Go to the Belgian railways site English version and book a return ticket Brussels-Aachen-Brussels. The cheapest option should be about €38 per person.
3. Contact us with your train dates and times Aachen-Bayerisch Eisenstein-Aachen and we will arrange an RIT ticket for that portion at a fixed price of €113 per person return plus seat reservation charges. (If you wish to pay us for this by credit card, there will be additional 2.5% charge).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you make the whole journey by train from your home outside Germany but within Europe or from your starting point if you are flying to Europe and travelling around by train, we provide you with a home-cooked meal on the evening of your arrival.
If you are making your journey within Germany, we have access to cheaper tickets - please ask us - these cost (return) €60.50 up to 400km and €113 for above 400km. Generally, if travelling within Germany, the earlier you book, the cheaper the tickets.
We can meet you!
If you arrive at Bayerisch Eisenstein by train, we can collect you and your luggage from the station and take you back there when you leave (no charge).
If you are walking from the station, simply come out of the station and turn left. As you approach the end of the cobbled Bahnhofstrasse, take the 2nd turning round from your left. We are the big yellow house with the green shutters on the right.
