Great Hotels and Restaurants
These are places which are our favourites for eating AND staying. Places we try to stay at whenever we are in the area but only if we can get there in time for dinner:
Schlosshotel Neckarbischofsheim (Germany)
A great stop in Central Germany on the way between the UK and the Bavarian Forest, near Heilbronn. The hotel building is not the prettiest - it looks a bit like a pleasant office block but it overlooks a lovely park at the back, with a small but extremely pretty castle, a pond, a few ruins and people jogging, or taking their children or dogs for a walk. The hotel entrance has a dramatic ceiling painted with pictures of a mythical maiden who turned into a mermaid, with the motif repeated on the carpets. The service is excellent in a laid back style - as waiter from the restaurant will probably come to the desk when you arrive and they are good at remembering regular guests. The rooms are simply but elegant and very comfortable. In summer you can eat outside on the large terrace overlooking the castle. In winter there is a spacious restaurant. Excellent food and there is a menu of traditional dishes which is reasonably priced if you are watching the budget.
Romantik Hotel Jagdhaus Waldidyll, Hartenstein (Germany)
We have not been there for a few years but we are still hoping to go back. The service was sublime, the room beautiful and so comfortable and the food was heavenly. They could do no wrong.
Great Restaurants/Shame About the Rooms
These are places we go to because we love the food. Just a pity that the same attention has not been given to the rooms - we are not looking for lavish bedrooms, just up to date, comfortable and a little stylish!
Seehotel Lackner, Mondsee (Austria)
Landhotel Muehlboeck, Schwarzenberg (Austria)
Great Restaurants
(no rooms or, if they have rooms, we have not tried them)
Riverside Inn, Aymestrey (UK)
Close to the Welsh border, near Leominster/Ludlow. Lovely old beamed pub with terrific atmosphere and great food. We always try to have a meal there when we are at our home in Knighton. Also have rooms but have had no reason to try them!
Waldbahn, Zwiesel (Germany)
Traditional railway hotel opposite the station. Traditional decor with waitresses in local dress. The food is based on traditional dishes but brought very much up to date and absolutely superb. Has rooms but we have had no reason to try them.
Poeschl Stuben, Bayerisch Eisenstein (Germany)
Excellent Bavarian-Bohemian food, brought right up to date. Lovely atmosphere in the main panelled room.
Danieli, Himmelpfortgasse 3, Vienna (Austria)
Excellent Italian food and wine, right in the centre of Vienna, just off the Kaernterstrasse, near the Stephansdom. A few tables outside in summer.
Great Hotel/Shame About the Restaurant
Hotel Peter, St. Wolfgang, Austria
Given our love of good food, there were never going to be many places in this category, but we do visit this hotel, so it must be good! The food is good but does not match the lovely quality of the rooms. The hotel is a little above lake level. All rooms have a balcony overlooking the lake and the mountains beyond as well as part of the village. In summer, you can sit outside and watch the steamers on the lake. The rooms have effectively mini-suites, with a small, comfortable seating area next to the door to the balcony, partly separated from the seating area. The bathroom has a large walk in shower as well as bathtub and separate WC. The public areas are beautifully furnished with painting and drawings, traditional painted furniture and other items. The restaurant is also very attractive and there is terrace outside.
