The Year in Bayerisch Eisenstein

May

Raising of the Maypole
Raising the may pole

May starts with the traditional raising of the Maypole on May 1st, in our village and many other places.

Early May is the time when the 'Liberation' at the end of the 2nd World War is celebrated - across the border in the Czech Republic of course, not in Germany. The Czechs used to celebrate liberation by the Red Army, now it is by the Americans - there are plaques and monuments in Klatovy and Plzen, which has a whole festival to celebrate the event.

The cable car on the Arber mountain restarts, usually in the 1st half of the month, when there is also a May market in Plzen.

May weather can be very hot and sunny and all of the tourist attractions and restaurants are open again. It is an excellent time to visit places such as Prague and Passau which can get very full in the summer.

May 1st is a public holiday, as well as Ascension Day.
