June
June is when the local festivals really get under way – there are beer and/or medieval festivals somewhere in the region every weekend from now until the end of the summer.
There are big village festivals in Bodenmais and Rinchnach celebrating their local saints, Benno and Gunther, with plenty of beer and music.
There are also festivals celebrating the importance of the trading routes through the forest, linking Bavaria and Bohemia: the Festival of the 5 Petalled Rose in Cesky Krumlow and the Festival of the Salt Route in Prachatice. Many villages, including Bayerisch Eisenstein, celebrate the Summer Solstice with beer, music and bonfires. There is a Glass Festival in Frauenau and a Medieval Spectacular at the wonderful Schloss Egg. And plenty of other folklore and historical festivals.
And the big European Weeks cultural festival based in Passau gets under way, with concerts, exhibitions and guided walks taking place in and around the city and just across the border in Austria and Bohemia.
It is also a great month for walking in the forest or visiting the cities for sightseeing. The Bavarian Forest is rarely full of visitors in June (unless it is a public holiday weekend).
Whit Monday and Corpus Christi are public holidays.
