July
Bavarian-Bohemian Forest at Bayerisch Eisensein
Where the Iron Curtain used to be. It looks so peaceful now.
July and August are the peak holiday months. In common with the mountain areas in the rest of Central Europe, there can be periods of heavy rain, sometimes even exciting thunder storms. But the rain often comes at night. Days are mostly hot, sunny and dry.
The peak of the summer medieval festival season is late July/early August. The historic fests continue, especially Pandurenfest in Spiegelau, marking the attack by Habsburg Empress Maria Theresia's troups on the area and festivals celebrating the medieval salt trade in Grainet and Grafenau. Our 2 local towns, Regen and Zwiesel, also have their week long fests - the one in Regen is particularly impressive, with gondolas on the river and a special casserole called the 'Pichelsteiner Eintopf'.
The European Weeks cultural festival in Passau continues until late July. There is also a Folklore Festival in the town square in Klatovy and Jazz on the Danube in the lovely town of Straubing, including a Saturday 'Jazz Brunch' with bands playing for free on the streets.
One of the highspots of the summer is the little known Open Day at the Riedl glassworks at Riedlhuette, usually on the last Sunday in July. As well as an opportunity to see the glassworks, there is a huge sale of seconds and ends of lines at amazing prices, such as designer wine glasses for €1-2 each.
It is also a great month for outdoor activities: walking in the forested mountains and besides the rivers and lakes, mountain biking both sides of the border, eating and drinking outdoors, in beer gardens and on restaurant terraces.
We try to organise barbecue evenings for our guests, with local food and music, most weeks during the height of the summer season.
