August
Traditional dances from the Bavarian Forest
July/August are the peak holiday months. In common with the mountain areas in the rest of Central Europe, there can be periods of heavy rain, sometimes even exciting thunder storms. But the rain often comes at night. Days are mostly hot, sunny and dry. From mid August, with the days getting shorter, the evenings are a little cooler.
The peak of the summer medieval festival season is late July/early August.
The high point of the year in Bayerisch Eisenstein is the Ludwigshoehfest on the 2nd weekend in August – beer festival, shooting competition and medieval market. To coincide with the village Fest, the local railway museum lays on steam train trips and even has training courses for honorary steam engine drivers!
August is also the month of the Dragon Slaying Festival in Furth im Wald and of the Gaeubodenfest in Straubing, the 2nd largest Fest in Bavaria. There is a big chuch festival on the Arber mountain, a glass festival in our local town on Zwiesel and many more. Certainly no reason to get bored.
And all the open air activities are still in full swing - walking, mountain biking, high wire parks, golf and lots more. And this area is almost never crowded even in the height of summer - there is space for everyone.
Weather in August 2007/8/9:
- Average daytime temperature: 23-24°C
- Average nightime temperature: 11-12°C
- No. of days with rain: 6-10
